Made Better With Butter

How these recipes come together

We're John and Maggie. We're the friends people text when they want a recipe that works, or somewhere good to eat. This site is where we keep the answers.

Most of what we cook starts one of three ways.

We blend a few recipes into one

Usually we already know what we want to make. We'll pull up two or three versions online, take the best idea from each, and cook our own. Every post links the recipes we started from and lists exactly what we changed, so you can always go back to the source.

We start from America's Test Kitchen

We love America's Test Kitchen. When they've already tested a dish to death, their recipe is our starting point. Their classic apple pie (paywalled), which mixes sweet and tart apples, is one we come back to. So is their crab cake recipe, made with Dungeness. When we post one of those, we credit them, link the original, and only show what we did differently.

Heads up: most America's Test Kitchen recipes are behind a paywall, so the links need a subscription (or a free trial) to open.

We make something from what's in the fridge

Some nights you just need dinner. We'll look at what's in the fridge and pantry, decide on a flavor we're after, and work out the rest with an AI assistant as we go. The andouille chicken orzo soup came from a Tuesday when we wanted gumbo and didn't have time for a roux.

The house rule

Whatever the recipe says, we usually go two to three times on the garlic, and the same for butter and cream. That's the "made better" part. When we've done it, the post shows the original amount next to ours, so you can decide how far to go.

No ads, no pop-ups, and the recipe is always one tap away. Everything here we've actually cooked.
